What happens when you leave a colony of androids to look after your home planet with explicit instructions to re-plant with flowers & fauna when conditions improve from a devastating occurrence?  Obviously. you or I would carry out such an order as stated. However, what happens if the soil is so sterile it cannot support any kind of living material yet? We would give up and leave until the time was right, but these androids are not capable of such rational, so they re-programme their circuits to utilise any suitable material available. In this case 'polymers' will be a suitable substitute. Over many millennia the planet becomes covered in regimental rows of 'plastic trees & flowers, all copied from historical photographs stored in the 'droids hard drive. So how do you then convince these industrious machines that their fauna is not really 'fauna'. Try telling that to a computer!
